Riehen & Bettingen

Known as the more 'rural' side of Basel Stadt, Riehen and Bettingen provide village living with city amenities.

Marble Surface

Riehen and Bettingen are the two more rural communes within the Canton of Basel Stadt.  Located only a short bus or tram ride away from the city, these villages feel a world apart due to the physical separation provided by the Baumlihof (the farmlands surrounding Riehen) and their location nestled against foothills along the German border. Both villages are quiet and residential, with a shared history as farming communities.  They are distinguished from each other in a couple important ways: Riehen was home to several wealthy family estates and has the Canton's only vineyards, while Bettingen is home to the pilgrimage community of St. Chrischona and is highest point in Basel Stadt.

Museums & Galleries

In terms of museums and galleries, Riehen packs a mighty punch for such a small village.  It is home to the world famous Foundation Beyeler, which in addition to its impressive permanent collection hosts numerous popular temporary installations. Next to the Beyeler is Kunstraum Riehen, which features contemporary, mostly regional art.

Across the street, you can visit the colourful world of Swiss artist Claire Ochsner at her Künstlerhaus and sculpture garden.  Still on the hunt for some contemporary art - check out Gallerie Mollwo's exhibitions - located a short walk into the village center.

Beyond art, Riehen offers a fun afternoon out for the whole family at the Museum of Kultur & Spiel.  The museum features a few permanent interactive exhibits as well as playful temporary ones and family events.

Outdoor Swimming Pools

Riehen and Bettingen have some excellent options for outdoor pools in the summertime.

Riehen Naturbad is a lovely oasis that has a fantastic pool that is chemical-free! The water is cleaned by an amazing natural ecosystem. There are several different swimming areas, including a pool for laps, one for diving, a large slide and a toddler splash pad.  It can be very busy in warm weather, so go first thing in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

Bettingen Gartenbad is small, but generally more quiet and has an ample area for kids to run and play with a small playground and a couple tables for table tennis.

The Wiese

On the edge of Riehen is the Wiese River, which flows south from Germany's Black Forest until it joins with the Rhein in Basel.  Historically, the river was used for fishing, agricultural irrigation, mill power and timber rafting.  The river has been 'corrected' several times to manage flood risks.  Today it is a source of natural beauty and recreation, where you can go for a stroll/jog or enjoy a picnic. Swimming or wading (at your own risk) is also possible when the conditions are good and you may even spot a blue heron!  It is also a popular spot for foraging (wild garlic, elderflower and dandelion).

Wenkenhof Park & estate

Wenkenhof Park and its related estate buildings sit at the top of Riehen, commanding expansive views of the city as well as places for quiet contemplation.  The park is perfect for a stroll or weekend picnic.  You can also try the lovely brunch at the Bistro Reithalle, located in the estate's old stables.  The Reithalle and the grand Villa Wenkenhof are both available for rental.  The location is perfect for a wedding - so much so, that Basel-native and tennis star Roger Federer hosted his own wedding there.

Hiking & Forest Fitness

Riehen is blessed a large network of forest trails accessible from many of its eastern neighbourhoods and from the upper half of Friedhof Am Hörnli.  These trails include gravel roads and smaller wooded footpaths, which are dotted with fire pits. There are also trails that connect into neighbouring Bettingen and St. Chrischona and offer beautiful views of the Rhein and Basel Stadt.

For a beautiful walk with an art theme, be sure to try  24-Stops Rehberger Weg. This trail is approximately 5km in length (one way) and connects Fondation Beyeler in Riehen to the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Along the way you find 24 colorful art installations of varying form created by the artist Tobias Rehberger.  Read more about it in this article.

If you are looking for more of a challenge, you can try out a small Vita Parcours (outdoor fitness area), which is located just above a large grill area and small playground off the Am Ausserberg access point.
