Klybeck
A mostly residential neighbourhood with a distinctly bohemian feel, Klybeck is filled with artist collectives, cool restaurants and excellent grafitti.
Many thanks to
Steve Sanderson for helping to map this neighbourhood!
Until 1870 Klybeck was primarily a meadow and relatively sparsely populated. That soon changed, as its proximity to water and location outside of town made it desirable for the chemical industry. The chemical industry (which has now become the pharmaceutical industry) first started by producing dyes for silk ribbons and fabrics. This industry boomed and resulted in the construction of industrial chemical plants in Klybeck.
Since the 1960s, Klybeck has been reclaimed as a residential neighbourhood, but it still retains some of its more industrial past in areas such as Ciba. Today it is a quiet neighbourhood bordered by the Wiese on the north and the Rhein on the east. It maintains its funky industrial edge with places like Holzpark and is a mecca in Basel for the bohemian lifestyle.

Klÿck
The Wiese
On the northern border of Klybeck is the Wiese River, which flows south from Germany's Black Forest until it joins with the Rhein in Basel. Historically, the river was used for fishing, agricultural irrigation, mill power and timber rafting. The river has been 'corrected' several times to manage flood risks. Today it is a source of natural beauty and recreation, where you can go for a stroll/jog or enjoy a picnic. Swimming or wading (at your own risk) is also possible when the conditions are good and you may even spot a blue heron! It is also a popular spot for foraging (wild garlic, elderflower and dandelion).
