Yet another instalment of Basel's 'hidden gems' where we find Basel's best and perhaps least-know restaurants. Small, sometimes hidden places that are big on flavour and worth stepping off the beaten path.

Erlenstrasse 59, 4058 Basel

Prepare yourself for what will surely become your next new food-fusion obsession. Kiatoria Sushi is home to Basel's best (and perhaps only) sushi burger. Imagine a giant rice ball, sliced in half and filled with all your favourite sushi ingredients, then wrapped in nori, dipped in tempura and deep fried to perfection. The sushi burgers here are truly phenomenal and so good that you may find that they are the only thing you order (guilty). If you do want to venture out and try some other dishes on their menu, they also have regular burgers, as well as a wide selection of sushi rolls and poke bowls. To complete the sushi experience for dessert, make sure to try their dessert roll, a chocolate crepe wrapped around a banana and sliced sushi style (of course).
Güterstrasse 100 4053 Basel

You may know Amani's from their Markthalle stall, but their newest location in Gündeli is certainly worth the trip. The restaurant itself is a beautiful space that has been newly renovated and lovingly decorated, perfect for parties or special occasions. Besides the ambiance, what you really come her for is the food. Think perfectly grilled marinated meats, fluffy rice pilaf and yogurt sauce. Everything here is cooked with love and you can taste it. As chef Amani puts it, "Flavours tell stories, let them speak to you". And once you do, you will come back again and again.
Klybeckstrasse 122, 4057 Basel

In the heart of Kleinbasel you will find a rich and delicious world of Eritrean and Ethiopian cuisine. For those of you unfamiliar with Ethiopian food, it consists of slow cooked stews and lentils, along with different types of salad, all served on the most important part, injera, a large fluffy, fermented, flat bread (say that three times fast!). Injera is meant to be eaten with your hands, which provides an 'intense sensory experience'. Shiro showcases these traditional flavours to perfection in their cosy restaurant. To end the meal make sure to try their 'Traditional Coffee Ceremony' a rare experience, prepared directly at your table.
Solothurnerstrasse 37, 4053 Basel

For those of you who have been craving Korean food (like me) look no further that Restaurant Bori. Located on a side street in Gündeli this 'hidden gem' offers authentic Korean flavours in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. They have all your favourites including BulGoGi (Korean BBQ), which is served with a personalized grill at your table. They are also open for lunch with less complicated, though still satisfying dishes such as BiBimBap (a rice dish with meat, tofu vegetables and egg) and Bokkeum Myun (a stir fried noodle dish).
Oberbaselweg 6, 79576 Weil am Rhein, Germany

Last but certainly not least is Masala Indishes Restaurant in Weil am Rhein. It is definitely a hike to get there (especially if you don't have a car), but absolutely worth the trip. Controversially I will declare it the best Indian restaurant in the Basel area (not actually in Basel) and will stand my ground for anyone who comes for me. Those who care to challenge must first go and try their Lamb Tikka, which is absolutely perfectly seasoned and grilled as well as their famous Butter Chicken. Don't forget to end the meal with a sweet treat, homemade Gulab Jamun. Plus it's in Germany so you will be shocked by the prices (in a good way).
I hope this list inspires you to try something new. If you are looking for more Basel restaurant recommendations make sure to read: Basel's Hidden Gems: Restaurant Edition Hidden Gems Restaurant Edition: Part 2
