There's definitely a thrill in finding a fabulous restaurant that's 'off-the-beaten-path'. These places are generally small, not necessarily well-known and sometimes down-right hard to find! But the food is delicious and they are well worth the effort.

Friedrichstrasse 25, 4055 Basel
This place has by far some of the best fish dishes in Basel. Their 'Ceviche Caliente', a paella-style dish in a light tomato sauce, topped with a heap of excellently-prepared seafood, is the star of the menu. Top it off with a frothy Pisco Sour and you have a great evening ahead of you! They are only open in the evenings from Wednesday to Saturday and reservations are recommended.

Gundeldingerstrasse 1a, 4053 Basel
If you are looking for this restaurant and you find yourself in a tennis club, fear not you are in the right place. Truly a hidden gem in Gundeli, Max restaurant has an ever-changing menu of fabulous Mediterranean cuisine made with local ingredients. Silvana, the founder, has trained in several Michelin-starred restaurants before opening this one and you can tell. This is also a great brunch spot on the weekend, but be sure to make a reservation.

Vogesenstrasse 96, 4056 Basel
This local pub is very unassuming and definitely of the 'hole-in-the-wall' variety, but well worth a visit, because their burgers are amazing! Their patties are thin, perfectly seasoned, with crispy edges and include all your favourite toppings. A rarity in Switzerland, they are also very affordable. Paired with some crispy fries and a cold beer, there is nothing better.

Güterstrasse 166, 4053 Basel
For some truly excellent Portuguese food in the heart of Gundeli, make sure to visit Spark. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this is the perfect stop for any time of the day, especially in the evenings when you can enjoy a wide range of petiscos (Portuguese tapas) with an excellent selection of wine and some fabulous olive oil. They also do take away if you want to have an impressive apèro spread at home. Make sure to make reservations though, as it very popular.

Güterstrasse 170, 4053 Basel
Looking for the best döner kebab in Basel? This is hands-down the place to go. Beef is the star of this restaurant, and the marinated thinly-sliced entrecôte and rump steak that make up the majority of the menu is perfectly flavoured and crispy on the edges. This place is so good it has even made the Gault&Millau listing. As you can imagine it's pretty busy and they don't take reservations, so make sure to arrive early and be prepared to wait if you want a spot.

Uferstrasse 40, 4057 Basel
This iconic red lighthouse ship was dragged all the way from England to Basel and refurbished just so it could become an incredibly unique restaurant and concert venue. They serve a small, delicious and ever-changing menu from fresh local ingredients with some fabulous cocktails. The most spectacular selling point though is the view. There is seating inside, but the best seats are up top where you can feel like you are on a cruise without having to leave port. Reservations are recommended.
