Three Films to Understand Swiss Culture

Moving to Switzerland is more than learning a language or passing a test, it’s about understanding a mindset and cultural background. Language connects us to cultural understanding. As expats, we often focus on grammar, vocabulary, and exam preparation (especially to secure your C permit / Schweizer Aufenthaltstitel), but the real integration begins when you start to feel the culture behind the language.

One of the most enjoyable and effective ways to do that? Watching Swiss films in one of the native languages. Subtitles are of course allowed and most probably necessary, but the good news is you don’t need to understand every word. Watch with subtitles, enjoy the story, and focus on the cultural insights. Language comes step by step.
Here are my top three Swiss film recommendations:
Die göttliche Ordnung (The Divine Order)

This inspiring film tells the story of Swiss women fighting for the right to vote granted nationwide only in 1971. Through the journey of an ordinary housewife, you experience how change happens in a direct democracy. It’s a powerful way to understand Swiss political culture, civic responsibility, and the importance of participation, key topics for anyone preparing for Swiss citizenship.
Die göttliche Ordnung is available on platforms like Apple TV, blue TV, Cinu filmingo (often with German audio and subtitles in English/French).
Die Schweizermacher (The Swissmakers)

If you want to understand what 'being Swiss' looks like in everyday life, this classic is a must. With humour and sharp observation, it explores the naturalization process and the expectations placed on foreigners. You’ll see that integration is not just about speaking German and it’s also about understanding habits, unwritten rules, and cultural nuances.
Die Schweizermacher is available to watch on Play Suisse.
Wilhelm Tell

The story of Wilhelm Tell is one of Switzerland’s most important national myths. It represents courage, independence, and resistance against oppression, values that still shape Swiss identity today. Even a modern or more dramatic version gives you essential cultural background and helps you understand the deeper roots of Swiss society. Fun fact: The original legend was written by a German, Friedrich Schiller.
Wilhelm Tell is a modern, visually intense retelling of Switzerland’s most famous national myth, focusing on freedom and resistance. It helps you understand the cultural roots of Swiss identity in a powerful and accessible way. It is available to watch on Just Watch.
Swiss Streaming Sites

Switzerland is unique not only because of its culture, but also because of its four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. That’s why it’s completely normal and even encouraged to watch films and documentaries in different languages. Platforms like Play Suisse (often called SwissPlay) offer Swiss films, series, and documentaries from all language regions usually with subtitles, so you can switch between languages and still follow the story.

You can also explore European cultural content on Arte, which provides high-quality documentaries in multiple languages. This is a fantastic way to improve your listening skills while deepening your understanding of Swiss and European culture.
Why This Matters
Preparing for German exams like Fide, Goethe, Telc, KDE or SDS is not just about memorizing rules it’s about understanding how the language lives within the culture. These films help you connect the dots between language, history, and everyday life in Switzerland even if you watch them with subtitles.
You don’t have to understand everything perfectly to start integrating. Watch, listen, feel the culture—and then learn how to express it step by step. What matters most is that you understand the message. The language will follow.
This is exactly where I come in. I am Heike, the GermanTestPerfectionist. I help internationals like you prepare for German exams (Fide, Goethe, Telc, KDE, SDS) so you can secure your Swiss residence permit or take the next step toward your Swiss passport.
As a German who lived and worked in the United States for many years, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to learn a new language and how rewarding (and even fun!) it becomes with the right method.
I specialize in working with learners who already 'know a lot' and want to finally use it confidently. My approach focuses on closing your gaps and 'showing you how to show off' with what you already know. I help you prepare for the German language test and coach you for Swiss Citizenship for all German speaking cantons. I help you take what you understand from films, from daily life and turn it into clear, simple, and correct German that you can actually use.
